Welcome to Orlando’s Speed World dragstrip on Hwy 50 between Orlando and Titusville. The folks at the Kennedy Space Center just down the road set the stage for the wheelstanders, jet cars and trucks appearing on Saturday night by launching a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral at lunchtime. The rocket sent the Swift satellite into space to study the origin of Gamma Ray bursts. I’m sure it measured the fireballs bursting from Bob Motz’ truck at Speed World that night!

Jon Oswell in his Ladder Truck #33 and Ken Nelson in his CoolBus got things off to a rip roaring start.

SuperMario Carranca faces off against new jet driver Ken Marley and his car Rocky Mountain Thunder, formerly Lou Sattelmaier’s Sonic Thunder II. The race was Ken’s third of his career and his first night race. Mario took Ken downtown after executing very percussive fire shows each race. It was Mario’s first race since the untimely death of his beloved wife Patty-Dial Carranca two weeks earlier. Though he misses Patty dearly, Mario plans to continue driving his car in 2005.

In between passes, KC & Linda Jones’ Jack Russell Terrier Sam demonstrated how he will chase a flashlight beam like a lawyer after an ambulance.

Motz cooks the wall at Speedworld and probably roasts hot dogs and marshmallows of the guys who were watching the race from a scaffold in their backyard on the other side of the wall.
